Chen, Ta-Yuan (Henry)
BA (CCU), MA (Tunghai University)
Henry’s fields of interest include: classical Chinese literature,
politics and maritime history of Taiwan, and translation and interpreting
(between English and Chinese languages).
Henry received research training in classical Chinese literature and
history at CCU, then completed his MA at Tunghai University, Taiwan.
His MA thesis focused on the Japanese assimilation policy on Taiwan;
however, he shifted his research interest to maritime history in his
PhD study at Murdoch. He submitted his PhD thesis in mid-2006.
In his PhD dissertation, Taiwanese Offshore (Distant Water) Fisheries
in Southeast Asia, 1936-1977, he examined government policy guidance
and the birth of Taiwan’s fishing industry in Southeast Asia. He
also described and analysed the relationships between the fishing industry,
the Government, the military, and ancillary industries, and observed
the management of the onshore fishing companies, fishers’ daily
lives at sea, and the culture and routine practices of the offshore fishing
communities.
While researching his PhD, he spent considerable time developing translation
and interpreting skills. Henry was successfully accredited as an Interpreter
(2005) and Translator (2006) by the National Accreditation Authority
for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).
He is currently working on a research project for the History of Marine
Animal Populations (HMAP), focusing on the evolution and development
of the Taiwanese offshore tuna fishery, 1913- 2006.
