Adam Schwarz

Adam Schwarz is a senior fellow at the McKinsey Global Institute and
contributes to MGI's research in Asia. Previously he was the director
of Communications for McKinsey Asia. Schwarz is a regional specialist,
with more than 15 years working in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia,
Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
Schwarz, who joined McKinsey in 2001, is currently leading a team of consultants
assisting the Indonesian President in designing and structuring a new
agency to coordinate and manage reconstruction activities in Aceh Province,
which was devastated by a tsunami on 26 December 2004, taking more than
120,000 lives. He has also served several of McKinsey's public-sector
clients in Southeast Asia on issues such as economic policy, organizational
change, and stakeholder analysis.
Prior to joining McKinsey, Schwarz ran his own consulting firm named Nusantara
Consulting, based in Washington, D.C. His firm provided political, economic,
and business risk analysis on Southeast Asian countries and corporations
to private, public-sector, and multinational clients.
For the 10 years leading up to early 1997, Schwarz was a correspondent
for the Far Eastern Economic Review, a Dow Jones publication, in multiple
Asian countries. His writing covered a broad range of business, financial,
political, and economic issues. In the early 1990s, Schwarz wrote the
highly acclaimed study on contemporary Indonesia, A Nation in Waiting:
Indonesia's Search for Stability. He has also written extensively
on ASEAN issues.
Schwarz graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts degree
in economics (1983). He holds an M.B.A. degree in International Business
from Columbia University (1987), where he was awarded a University Fellowship
for Professional Achievement. He is a member of the Council on Foreign
Relations in the United States.
